American Soldier

You came and visited my classroom today, a soldier outfitted in your dress blues, everything tip top from your haircut to the shine on your shoes. You spoke to us about your tour overseas, fighting on the front lines in Afghanistan.

You told us about living in tents, and having to eat food from the chow hall, or MREs when you were out in the field. You lived with the constant fear of mortar attacks, and always fearing the next explosion near your base. You always prayed before journeying out on a mission, praying that you and your battalion would come back alive.

There was always the threat of bombs along the roadway, hidden in the dirt. Your vehicle could come upon one with no notice, and it would explode. Snipers were everywhere, and you had to have your eyes peeled at all times for anyone hiding in the shadows. You were always on edge, it wasn't possible to relax.

More than what you had to worry about around you, mostly you missed all of those you loved back home. During your tour, you missed Christmas, your anniversary, the birth of your baby, and your brother's high school graduation. Your grandpa passed away before you could get back, and you missed the funeral. Your grandpa was your biggest supporter when you were a quarterback on the high school football team. He always encouraged you to do your best, and to believe in yourself. That's what led you to join the military after graduation.

Unfortunately, your military jeep hit an IED one night when you were out on routine patrol. You survived, but 5 members of your battalion did not. The drs said you were lucky to survive, but you will never walk again.

Through our tears, we realized you did this for us. You gave up so much so we could live in this beautiful America, the best country in the world. We are free to speak, free to worship, free to bear arms, and free to live as we wish. As for me and my family, we choose to say thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you for the sacrifice you make every day, for all you give up, and for all you endure, to guarantee that America is the best place to live in all the world. We support you and thank you each and every day. God bless the USA, and God bless the American soldier.

kids and eating right

Today I was out at the zoo working on an event, Animal Thanksgiving. My niche was crafts with the children, and we made bird feeders with pine cones, peanut butter and birdseed. What a mess! But I digress.

A family came in, and their son adamantly refused to make a bird feeder. (The only refusal I had all day). The parents and little boy sat down at the next table over, and enjoyed a snack. As I oversaw bird feeder making, I overheard part of their conversation:

Dad: You like peanut butter and M&Ms, I don't see what the problem is.

Son: Dad, you're always trying to get me to eat things that aren't healthy for me. It doesn't make any sense.

I was just shocked! This little boy was only about 5 years old, and so concerned about eating only healthy food? Wow! I also think he is strongly opinionated, and the parents are going to have their hands full when he hits his teens!

God Bless!

kid funnies

I was talking with my son about the upcoming additions to the zoo where I am a volunteer. Here is the conversation we had:

Me: We are getting Elands, ostriches, and emus. By summer, they hope to add Wildebeest and Thompson's Gazelles. Those are the gazelles the cheetahs eat. But they are really hard to find these days, no one is breeding them.

Son: They'll be even harder to find after the cheetahs get them.

Conversation I had with high schooler later that morning:

Me: the radio station is giving out t-shirts to anyone who donates a frozen turkey for Thanksgiving. You can also give $10.00, which they call "paper turkeys", and still get the T-shirt.

High schooler: You mean they are going to tease people with paper turkeys?

Me: No, honey, they are going to take your $10.00, and go buy real turkeys for people.

I love kids! LOL

God bless,

Over my dead body!

How many times have we used that phrase when we feel so strongly about something. Over my dead body will you have the car this Friday night? Over my dead body will your mother come move in with us. Well, after hearing this true story, I have made a vow NEVER to use it again.

Our church has a school from Pre-K to 8th grade. Many years ago, the staff decided they need a gymnasium for the students. They approached the priest about this subject, and he vehemently opposed the building of the gymnasium. He said, "Over my dead body will anything be built out there."

A couple of days later, he suffered a heart attack and almost died. He decided to re-think the building of the gymnasium, and they began construction a short time later. Watch what you say, and pray for the Lord to censor your mouth before you say something foolish.

God bless!
